Don’t Forget the Little Things
Written by Chris…Your Contributing Relocation Ally Intern
Most people agree on the fact that moving is oftentimes very stressful. Provided below are real-world suggestions from the Alliance Team and our Moving Associates. These six simple steps will undoubtedly get you and your family on the right track for your move.
Clear Out the Clutter
Have a garage sale! Donate to the Salvation Army, too. Everything you will not use at the new home should not be brought along with you during the move. Extra and unnecessary items will complicate your move and you certainly will not want to pay the extra penny for things you don’t need.
Take the Help
All of your closest friends and family will certainly be offering to help you out during your move. Whether the help be in the form of babysitting or bringing over baked goodies, take the help! During moves, people tend to isolate themselves and try to handle everything on their own…until they self-implode. Nobody can do everything singlehandedly.
Say Goodbye
Don’t be one of those people who try to avoid long goodbyes. Chances are that if you’re moving long distance, you’ll soon be missing all of those people from your old stomping ground. Have a going away party and spend time with all of your friends before you move. The only thing worse than leaving the people you love is not having a proper farewell.
Get Enough Sleep and Eat Well
There is a tendency during stressful moves to neglect one’s nutrition. However, ten cups of coffee will not keep you functioning in the long run. Proper nourishment is essential and without a healthy diet, you will not have the energy necessary for your move. Eat a balanced diet and be sure to stay hydrated so that you can keep your smile all day long.
Go With the Flow
Not everything during your move will go exactly as planned. Don’t be afraid to just throw the plan out the window and just go with the flow. Every move has its complications and you need to be prepared to go with plan B. Have some faith in the professionals who were hired to handle your move. Be kind and courteous to the people helping you and they will do a better job for you. What goes around comes around.
Be Prepared
A move is not something that should be taken lightly. A smooth transition requires weeks of preparation and collaboration. Give yourself ample time to fully address all of your moving prerequisites. In the long run, you will be happy you did and your move will be a cinch.
These six steps are beneficial, but not all-inclusive. When moving, always try to choose the less stressful path. In a sense taking care of yourself is also taking care of others. Stress is contagious and it radiates off of tense people. Take a couple of deep breaths and “don’t worry, be happy.” Cheerfulness is contagious as well!
Additionally, when hiring a mover there are 3 steps that should always be taken.
· Step 1: Be sure to check at least three recent references given to the mover in question.
· Step 2: Make sure you receive a few estimates and check to make sure you are comparing apples-to-apples.
· Step 3: Always be sure to use a mover that is a member of The American Moving & Storage Association!

Great post! Just don't forget your four-legged family members, either! Planning ahead can make sure your pet has a smooth move and avoid delays due to paperwork. For relocations to certain countries, you can even avoid quarantine entirely by planning ahead!
